Today’s post is a part of a new series in Hospitality contributed by Bridgett Glossner of Bridgett Kay Designs.
Years ago, when my husband and I were building our home, we didn’t want to just create a space for our growing family. We wanted to create a space we could invite people into. We love to host. Hospitality comes natural to us. But there is so much more to it than just inviting people in.
When we think of hospitality our mind can start to wander towards the physical things: a clean house, a beautifully prepared meal, a Pinterest worthy set table. Don’t get me wrong. Preparing a nice atmosphere can absolutely be part of it, but we can’t get so caught up in the preparing and the doing to forget about the opportunities to invite people into our lives, too. This opens so many doors for the gospel.
The details of opening our home is just the start to a beautiful opportunity to show people the love of Jesus.
Let’s take a quick look at the story of Martha and Mary.
“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.””
Luke 10:38-42 NLT
Details are just details. Martha was so focused on the details of hosting and serving that she was missing the most important part. Jesus. Mary took this opportunity to soak in time with Him. Do you see where I am going with this?
Should you open your home for guests? Yes. Should you prepare a nice atmosphere? Sure. Is it the end of the world if you don’t? Absolutely not! But, do not be so focused on the preparation that you neglect the people you’ve invited into your home.
Serving others is very important. As well as spending quality time and growing those relationships. Think about it: you invite someone in your home and you spend time getting to know them. You grow this relationship to a point where you know the things that they struggle with. The things that set their soul on fire. The dreams they are chasing or the doubts and fears they have. Wouldn’t that be an even better opportunity to open your door to them time and time again and cater to them specifically.
Do you get caught up in the details like Martha? Let’s try to remember the purpose of hospitality and allow God to change our hearts towards it.
